Conference Collected Wisdom Wiki

One output of WOWCS (the Workshop on Organizing Workshops, Conferences, and Symposia for Computer Systems) is a wiki to collect information on organizing conferences. I haven't looked at it in detail yet, but I'm putting the link here for future reference. Collecting experience in this way sounds like a good idea to me!

Consultation on European Commission ICT Work Programme 2011-2013 (D/139142)

2011-2013 (D/139142)

As you may be aware, the European Commission is now in the process of preparing the next ICT research Work Programme for years 2011-2013. In view of this, the Software & Service Architectures and Infrastructures unit is updating the research community's vision for the area, identifying key technological challenges and research priorities, and establishing a research agenda for the coming years.

This is achieved through consultation with external experts, with industry and with academia, while additional input comes from a number of initiatives that are developing roadmaps and research agendas for Software and Services, such as "Future Internet" (http://www.future-internet.eu/ ).

The main objectives of this consultation are to identify the key technical challenges, the success factors, the expected impacts, and to derive a list of research foci and priority actions to be implemented. For this, a wide range of aspects should be addressed including technological issues, research challenges and standardisation approaches. The timeframe to be considered for this Work Programme is 2011 to 2013.

Information about the area can be found on: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/home_en.html

The text of the current Work Programme 2009 - 2010 can be found on: ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp7/ict/docs/ict-wp-2009-10_en.pdf

We invite you to participate in this open consultation, providing your thoughts about (but not limited to) topics such as: Services and Architectures for the future Internet; Software Engineering; Service Engineering; Open Source Software; Virtualisation of ICT resources; Cloud Computing; Energy Efficient Software; Exploratory and long term research; or any other topic that you consider relevant. No specific question or "fill-in-the-boxes" format is provided, as we want to keep the consultation as open as possible, but please try to identify clearly the challenges and the expected impacts of what you propose.

The consultation is hosted by the site http://www.eu-ecss.eu/ and can be accessed at the URL http://www.eu-ecss.eu/contribution_list_2010

It will be possible to add contributions starting from 21/09/2009 until 02/11/2009; after this date, the consultation will be closed, and the resulting ideas and suggestions will be used as a valued input for the next research Work Programme.

We ask you kindly to limit each contribution to no more than 2500 characters, so that your ideas will be easy to read and understand; further details and longer contributions can be submitted in the form of a PDF file, which will then be published on the same web site.

Small Project Grants

The application deadline for the next round of Small Project Grants is Friday 30th October at 5pm.

I would be grateful if you could forward the information below to any staff or students who you think might be interested in applying for a Development & Alumni Small Project Grant in the next round.

Small Project Grants are intended to promote new initiatives in teaching, research and student provision at The University of Edinburgh, especially where relatively small sums can achieve significant effect. We have £65,000 to be distributed to students, staff, clubs, societies and University support services for a range of research projects, teaching and student activities.

There are also a large number of air miles available for distribution. Please be aware that air miles cannot be awarded retrospectively and are for British Airways flights only.

The Small Project Grant programme exists thanks to the generosity of graduates and friends through their donations to the Edinburgh Fund. The programme is managed by The University of Edinburgh Development Trust, a charity set up to provide philanthropic support for the University.

Application forms are available at http://www.edinburghcampaign.com/Campaign/Default2.aspx?PageID=68 or by contacting the Development Office. Detailed guidelines are included with the application form, and a list of recentawards are also available on the website.
