Proposals invited: research information management

JISC has invited institutions to submit proposals for projects in the area of research information management.

'Research Information' in this document refers to structured information about projects, researchers, research outputs and their value and impact, research impact more widely, funding streams, organisations such as funders and universities, and so on.

There is funding of up to £400,000 available for projects funded through this call. Projects should be up to six months long, and grants available will range from £20,000 up to £50,000 per project.

In the interest of sustainability, evidence of institutional commitment is required. This can be shown in direct funding contributions from the HEI to the project, commitment of staff time, equipment, software purchase etc. It is anticipated that projects in the call will involve institutions already working in this area and therefore will have complementary plans in place.

The deadline for receipt of proposals in response to this call is 12 noon UK time on Monday 11th January 2010. Projects should start at the beginning of March 2010 and end by the end of August 2010.

Participants should gain a deeper understanding of the proposal format and the key issues they are required to address in planning, writing and costing an Advanced Grant proposal. Attendance will be free of charge, thanks to the support from the hosting organisations. *Who should attend?* The sessions will be of particular interest to UK-based researchers planning to submit a proposal for the ERC Advanced Grants. ERI workshop on Funding opportunities for established researchers - 17 November 2009

As you may know ERI have been running, along with transkills and the Researcher Development Program (Corporate HR), a new set of courses designed to give all researchers at the University of Edinburgh the best possible knowledge of suitable sources of research funding and the way to make successful applications for this funding. You can find out more about these here: http://www.eri.ed.ac.uk/events/researchfunding.html 3 flavours of course have been developed: [1] an introduction to research funding; [2] external funding for early to mid-career staff; [3] opportunities for senior and established staff. Course 3: Funding opportunities for established researchers: ERI will be running a course for opportunities for senior and established staff in the College of Science and Engineering on 17 November 2009 here at King's Buildings. This workshop will be led by a senior member of staff from the College and its aim is to enable senior research staff to sustain and refresh their knowledge of the current funding landscape and catch up on any recent developments in their field. Peers from your College will give advice on the maintenance of your research funding and give you hints on making the best quality applications for the funding schemes that suit your research. This course will also explore the differences between domestic and international funding, making it invaluable for researchers moving to Edinburgh from abroad. In addition to personal funding large collaborative grants and projects will be discussed including sessions on European funding. This course is aimed at senior academic staff of PI level and above. To get the right balance of staff this will be an invitation-only event and it would be good to have your help in putting a list of invitees together. I would be grateful if you could nominate staff from your School to attend the course. If possible could you let me know who your nominations are by 10 November 2009. ESRC: changes to final report system

From 1st November 2009, the Council's current requirement for a 5000 word End of Award Report three months after the end date of its award will be replaced. The new arrangements are designed to capture more evidence of scientific and practical (I.e. economic, social or policy) impacts while also being more economical in terms of its demand on award-holders' time. The evidence collected by the new system will be used both to evaluate ESRC research and to support the funding case for social science by demonstrating even more clearly the academic and, where appropriate, practical impact of the work that the Council supports.

There are two steps to the new system. First, award-holders submit a much shorter End of Award Report three months after the end date of the project to provide the administrative details required by the ESRC for financial sign-off. Then, twelve months after the end of the project award-holders submit an Impact Report to provide concise details of outputs and impacts (both scientific and practical) to date. The new End of Award Report report, as with the current version, requires an electronic signature from your institution's Finance Officer or equivalent representative. The Impact Report does not require an institutional validation.

It is important to emphasise that the ESRC does not expect all of the projects it funds to achieve practical impacts. Award-holders who report only scientific contributions will not be disadvantaged in any way in the Council's evaluation process. It will be possible to achieve the highest evaluation grades for scientific and/or practical impacts.

The extended reporting period will allow more time for outputs and impacts to emerge before the Council's evaluation. The evaluation will now start twelve months after the end date of awards rather than three months as at present. There is also a facility for award-holders to update their project record with details of impacts that emerge beyond the time of the evaluation, and this extra information will be available to ESRC Committees when assessing future funding applications.

All ESRC award-holders who are affected by these changes will be contacted directly by the Council. The new report templates can be downloaded either from award-holders' grant pages on the ESRC Society Today web site or from:

One output of WOWCS (the Workshop on Organizing Workshops, Conferences, and Symposia for Computer Systems) is a wiki to collect information on organizing conferences. I haven't looked at it in detail yet, but I'm putting the link here for future reference. Collecting experience in this way sounds like a good idea to me!

As you may be aware, the European Commission is now in the process of preparing the next ICT research Work Programme for years 2011-2013. In view of this, the Software & Service Architectures and Infrastructures unit is updating the research community's vision for the area, identifying key technological challenges and research priorities, and establishing a research agenda for the coming years.

This is achieved through consultation with external experts, with industry and with academia, while additional input comes from a number of initiatives that are developing roadmaps and research agendas for Software and Services, such as "Future Internet" (http://www.future-internet.eu/ ).

The main objectives of this consultation are to identify the key technical challenges, the success factors, the expected impacts, and to derive a list of research foci and priority actions to be implemented. For this, a wide range of aspects should be addressed including technological issues, research challenges and standardisation approaches. The timeframe to be considered for this Work Programme is 2011 to 2013.

No specific question or "fill-in-the-boxes" format is provided, as we want to keep the consultation as open as possible, but please try to identify clearly the challenges and the expected impacts of what you propose.

Small Project Grants

The application deadline for the next round of Small Project Grants is Friday 30th October at 5pm.

I would be grateful if you could forward the information below to any staff or students who you think might be interested in applying for a Development & Alumni Small Project Grant in the next round.

Small Project Grants are intended to promote new initiatives in teaching, research and student provision at The University of Edinburgh, especially where relatively small sums can achieve significant effect. We have £65,000 to be distributed to students, staff, clubs, societies and University support services for a range of research projects, teaching and student activities.

There are also a large number of air miles available for distribution. Please be aware that air miles cannot be awarded retrospectively and are for British Airways flights only.

The Small Project Grant programme exists thanks to the generosity of graduates and friends through their donations to the Edinburgh Fund. The programme is managed by The University of Edinburgh Development Trust, a charity set up to provide philanthropic support for the University.
