JISC Grant Funding 01/12: Digital Infrastructure Programme

*Eligibility * Proposals may be submitted by HE institutions funded via HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW and DEL Northern Ireland, and by FE institutions funded via BIS, SFC, DFES Wales and DEL Northern Ireland. With regard to bids from Scottish institutions, SFC has applied a significant budget cut to JISC in 2011-12 AY. Following consultation with Scottish institutions, SFC has requested that the impact of this budget cut falls on the number of innovation projects JISC is able to fund at Scottish institutions, rather than to cut or increase charges for national services, such as JANET, JISC Collections and JISC Advance.

Whilst Scottish institutions therefore remain eligible to bid for project funding in response to this call, depending on the quality of the submissions, JISC may need to limit the number of projects awarded to Scottish institutions.

Proposals may be from single institutions or consortia unless indicated otherwise in the relevant call. Partnership arrangements may be developed outside the sector (for example with research council sites, publishers, commercial suppliers), but the lead partner must meet the criteria outlined above. Funds can only be allocated through the lead partner.

Call for EPSRC Building Global Engagements in Research Applications

EPSRC has recently announced the funding opportunity entitled 'Building Global Engagements in Research' (http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/calls/open/Pages/globalengagementsinresearch.aspx), where EPSRC is seeking to build capacity within UK research centres for international engagement. This call announces up to £6M in grants, of up to £500K each, to increase the strength and productivity of current international links, or build links in regions where none previously existed.

The focus of effort should be to enhance research programmes within an institution that address the objectives above and should utilize a number of existing mechanisms for support, such as workshops, research co-ordination, networking activities, short-term visits and programmes of staff, and post doctoral and student exchanges. Other innovative models of international partnership building are encouraged. Multidisciplinary applications will be considered, but the majority of the proposed research must fall within the EPSRC remit. Only ONE application per university will be permitted.

The College will now conduct an internal selection process to make the final decision on who goes forward to EPSRC, and applicants are invited to submit a short application for consideration by *4pm, Monday the 6 February 2012*.

After internal selection it should be noted that EPSRC's deadline for applications is 4pm, Thursday the 1 March 2012 and grants will have a start date of the 1 April 2012 and end by the 31 March 2013. No extensions will be given.

Applicants are requested to submit a one-page A4 application, as a single PDF document. Please label your PDF attachment with your name, and in the subject line of your email, please type 'Building Global Engagements Call'.

Applications should comply with the following:

1. Title of the project.

2. Brief description of the project's international partner(s), background, defined outcomes, clear objectives and how they will be achieved with milestones where appropriate, and the impact of the project.

It is critically important given the short timescales of this internal selection process that expressions of interest are made against these assessment criteria.

All expressions of interest must align with EPSRC's criteria and note that research is global and EPSRC need their portfolio of sponsored research and researchers to be able to collaborate and cooperate with appropriate internationally leading researchers from across the globe - both in basic research and in tackling globally important challenges and enabling 'best with best' collaboration.

Leverhulme Research Leadership Awards 2012

The University as a whole can only submit one application so potential candidates should be made are aware of the internal selection process. The Leverhulme Trust funds research in all areas except the type of medical research that could be funded by the Wellcome Trust or MRC. The Trust aims to fund research which does not fall easily within the remit of the UK Research Councils. For more information about Leverhulme's ethos, visit http://leverhulme.ac.uk/about/about.cfm.

The Research Leadership Award provides substantial funding to allow a researcher early on in their academic career to establish a research team. Funding is in the region of £800,000-1,000,000 and lasts for up to five years. This scheme has run once before, in 2006-7; Edinburgh was not successful under this competition.

Internal selection process

The University's Research Policy Group (http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/governance-strategic-planning/resea rch/rpg)

will make the final decision about which University of Edinburgh candidate will be put forward for the Leverhulme Research Leadership Scheme. Potential University of Edinburgh candidates will be required to submit the following information to the internal selection process:

A copy of their CV
A one-page outline of their proposed research. This needs to include a brief statement on why Leverhulme will like this research, and an approximation of the resources required (students, research assistants, etc.).
A statement from the Head of School or Centre stating why the candidate is both excellent both in themselves and in their fit to the School's/Centre's research strategy.

eFutures, the EPSRC funded network for UK electronics academics based in Newcastle and led by Prof. Anthony O'Neill, has been awarded a research grant from EPSRC to establish new cross-disciplinary research projects and collaborations. The eFuturesXD account will offer awards to support UK academics in electronics as they initiate collaborative research across their discipline boundary.

A total of £600,000 will be distributed by eFuturesXD over a three year period via four kinds of awards allowing access to funding for travel, meetings, facilities and project staff.

JISC Grant Funding 17/11: JISC World War One Open Educational Resources (OERs) Project

Please find below details of another call -- 17/11 -- from JISC. It's an interesting one, requiring applicants to develop resources about the First World War. The deadline for applications is *5^th December 2011*.

Please note that institutions are expected to fund the 'embedding'(i.e. incorporation of the resulting resource into teaching and learning) of the project themselves. Do make sure you speak to relevant people (e.g. head of centre) about this early on.

Funding for /Access to Resources /projects will help institutions develop and demonstrate the provision-in-partnership of integrated online service models, offering access to information, knowledge and expertise to business and community organisations and individuals, especially SMEs.

Funding for /Open Innovation /projects will help institutions develop and demonstrate effective models for opening up selected knowledge assets for co-development, with externals, in open marketplaces -- creating new business opportunities from online co-development with external parties.

A two-stage bidding process will be undertaken as outlined below:

*Stage 1: *Institutions should submit short two page 'pitches' which outline the institution's response to the programme objectives -- 'pitching' the idea, the partnerships and services / sectors involved.

*Stage 2: *Proposers shortlisted from the first stage will be invited to the second stage and will be required to present and 'pitch' their proposed project in person to an evaluation panel in January 2012 (as well as submit a project delivery plan).

£1 million is available (£80,000-£100,000 per project) to fund 12 month projects -- 6 under the /Access to Resources /strand and 6 under the /Open Innovation /strand. Projects should commence by 1 March 2012 and complete by 28 February 2013.

Engineering Enterprise Fellowships

The Royal Academy of Engineering has launched a new scheme, Engineering Enterprise Fellowships, which provide funding and support to outstanding entrepreneurial researchers, working in UK Universities, to enable them to spend 12 months developing the commercial potential of their research.

- Enterprise Fellowships provide up to £85,000 seed funding, including salary support, to build a commercial enterprise at a UK University.

- In addition to the funding, business training is provided to develop skills and masterclasses will be offered using experienced entrepreneurs to supplement the training.

- Mentors will be allocated to each Enterprise Fellow to provide support and advice during the Fellowship.

- Access will be given to business angels and venture capital networks through the Mentors.

Overview

The Leverhulme Trust has recently announced its Research Programmes call (http://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/funding/RP/RP.cfm) for the academic year 2011-12. Research Programmes are prestigious awards that are worth up to £1.75 million each. Step 1: Leverhulme Research Programmes Long Lunch

This will be an opportunity for researchers interested in being involved in an application to any of the three themes to get to know others with cogent interests and, hopefully, establish research teams. Attendees will be asked to give, either individually or in groups, a very brief (5 minutes max.) summary of the interests and expertise they think they could bring to an application to one or more of the themes. There will then be time for break-out discussions. We're pleased to say that Prof Steve Yearley will be present to speak about his own experiences of getting a proposal shortlisted.

Step 2: College-level Review

The purpose of this review is to finalise how many proposals are going forward from Edinburgh to Leverhulme and from whom - it is not a competitive process. College-level review will be conducted by College Deans of Research. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Leverhulme Research Programmes, two or three Deans are likely to review any one proposal.

- Deadline for receipt of proposals for internal review: 5pm, Friday 28th October 2011

Required format for proposals for internal review: 3 pages draft proposal (2 pages describing the project; 1 page describing the strengths of the research team, the timeline up to submission to Leverhulme and the reasons why Leverhulme will fund the bid over any others submitted to that theme).

Step 3: Completion and Submission of Proposals

Preparation of proposals will require the involvement of academic colleagues, school research administrators and ERI staff. Leverhulme's deadline is in early January 2012, meaning that, in practice, proposals need to be complete before Christmas 2011. (Minor changes can, of course, still be made over the Christmas break.)

JISC Grant Funding 12/11 and 13/11: Digital Infrastructure Portfolio

The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) invites institutions to submit funding proposals for projects to support the development and implementation of institutional approaches to digital literacies across the entire workforce and including students.

JISC Grant Call 03/11: Digging into Data Challenge

Deadline for applications is *16^th June 2011*.

The Digging into Data Challenge is sponsored by funders in the UK, Netherlands, USA and Canada. The Challenge is targeted to the humanities and social sciences and aims to address the following four goals

- to promote the development and deployment of innovative research techniques in large-scale data analysis that focus on applications for the humanities and social sciences;

- to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers in the humanities, social sciences, computer sciences, library, archive, information sciences, and other fields, around questions of text and dataanalysis;

- to promote international collaboration among both researchers and funders;

- to ensure efficient access to and sharing of the materials for research by working with data repositories that hold large digital collections.

Projects have to be international -- you need to have teams from at least two of the four different countries funding the call. Funding is for 6-24 months, and you need to complete projects by 31^st January 2014. For the UK part of the project, funding of up to £100,000 is available (more if you involve more than one UK institution).

Marie Curie Fellowships - call now out

The latest Marie Curie Fellowships call is now out. The deadline for applications is 11th August 2011.

Marie Curie Fellowships are for postdoctoral research in any subject (not just cancer research - a common misconception). They pay your salary and other costs for up to two years. There is no specific cut-off in terms of experience, but applicants are usually fairly early on in their postdoctoral career. You don't need an existing academic job to be eligible to apply.

The most important characteristic of this scheme is that you have to move country. There are three ways in which you can do this:

* Move from one EU country to another. * Come from outside the EU into the EU. * Go from inside the EU to outside the EU (but come back for a year at the end - no running off forever to shiny America or sunny Australia).

Eligibility

You need to have at least a PhD or four full-time years of experience of doing research at an equivalent level. Nationality restrictions also apply in some cases:

* Moving from one European country to another: You can be any nationality to apply for an Intra-European Fellowship. However, you cannot have spent more than 12 months out of the last 3 years living or doing research in the country to which you wish to move. (Holidays and national service don't count in this 12 months.) * Coming from outside the EU into the EU: You can, again, be of any nationality - you just need to be coming from outside the EU. Returning from career breaks

A relatively new characteristic of the scheme is the 'career restart' option. This is open to people who had a research job for at least 12 months before taking their career break. 'Career restart' applications are considered under a separate panel to try and ensure equal opportunities.

Money

The scheme pays a salary, relocation costs (EUR 700 a month for someone without a family), and research and training expenses (EUR 800 a month).

As you may have seen already, JISC issued call 01/11 "Digital infrastructure: Embedding usability & improving the uptake of resources & tools; & enhancing campus-based publications" towards the end of February. The deadline for applications is *30^th March 2011.

Funding of up to £500,000 is available for projects helping to embed usability within institutional practice, develop adaptable and learnable user interfaces for research tools and develop new publishing platforms.

Scottish institutions can lead on bids. Depending on the theme addressed, applications can be from single institutions and/or consortia. There is no stated limit on how many proposals a single institution can lead on.

Wolfson Research Merit Awards Call for Nominations

We would like to announce the latest call for nominations to the Wolfson Research Merit Awards scheme.

This scheme was established in 2001 to provide universities with additional funding to attract to this country or, retain here, scientists of outstanding achievement and potential.

The scheme, jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, has been hugely successful and we currently have approximately 200 award holders appointed across all the natural sciences and hosted at a range of UK institutions, including all Russell Group and a majority of the 1994 Group institutions.

We are looking to encourage nominations from science departments in your University to ensure the continued strength and competitiveness of academic science in the UK. The scheme should be attractive to those institutions looking for extra assistance in recruiting or retaining high calibre mid to senior career level researchers. We would particularly welcome applications from outstanding female researchers.

Please note that award-holders must hold a permanent post at the university at the time of starting the award and be wholly funded by the university. However, the post does not need to have been confirmed at the time the nomination is made.

The salary enhancement is usually in the range of £10K to £30K per annum. Universities should clearly be supporting nominees at a level commensurate with their experience and achievements. Research expenses are also considered for research costs not suitable for Research Councils' research grants applications and for overseas applicants to support integration into the UK research and funding environment.

The next deadline is 10th March 2011 and decisions will be made available by June 2011.

In this context a new Research initiative was launched in November, to be funded for Euro 5,000 regarding Cyber Security and Information Assurance. EPSRC Collaboration Fund

There is an EPSRC Collaboration Fund call out.

This is a pilot funding initiative with aim of facilitating the exploitation of economic outcomes deriving from research that has previously benefited from EPSRC grant support. Grant support will only be provided to projects that involve a research organisation in collaboration with at least one commercialising entity. The focus of this collaboration should be the commercial exploitation of EPSRC supported research and the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry.

What will it support

These activities might include, but are not limited to:

- Developing a prototype with the involvement of a commercialising partner;

- Undertaking trials and testing with a commercialising partner;

FET-Open is pleased to announce a new funding initiative targeted at Europe's young scientists with high potential.

* FET Young Explorers* is a continuous scheme which is designed with the needs of young researchers and scientists in mind. It can provide some of Europe's most promising young scientists with the opportunity to take their ideas forward in the form of small STREP proposals, with possibility of funding in the order of EUR 1 million.

Successful projects must be led by a young researcher, and the leadership by young researchers of all work packages is also required. No more than six years should have elapsed between the award of a Ph.D. (or equivalent) for each such young researcher and the date of submission of the short proposal.

FET-Open has high ambitions for the scheme. It is looking for ideas from Europe's best young scientists, first ever ideas which can change the face of ICT and computing forever.

In keeping with the FET-Open spirit, the FET Young Explorers scheme is continuously open, and applies a two-step submission scheme and FET-Open specific eligibility and evaluation criteria.

This call requires partnership between healthcare organisations and health service researchers with expertise in evaluation. For instance, a project evaluating a new form of diabetes care across a whole health economy might have input from an academic health services team, a lead clinician and the local diabetes network.

Opening up of Australian research funding initiatives gives EU researchers new opportunities for collaboration

Researchers in the EU now have increased opportunities to participate in Australian research programmes thanks to the recent opening up of major Australian-funded research funding initiatives.

Schemes include the Australian Research Council's Competitive Grants Programme and The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation's Flagship Fund.

A new project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) is being launched in November to raise awareness of opportunities for European-Australian research collaboration throughout the European research community.

AUS-ACCESS4EU is one of a number of ACCESS4EU projects which aim to increase the European research community's awareness of opportunities to participate in research, technological development and innovation (RTDI) programmes in industrialised countries outside Europe.

The project will be launched at an Information Day in London on 8 November and a further seven events are planned in cities throughout Europe. Speakers from the project's partner organisations will be joined by leading members of the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). In addition European researchers who have participated in research programmes in Australia will give a personal perspective on their experience.

The Information Day will be of particular interest to research managers and administrators in universities and other institutions.

Opportunity for Post-Graduate Research Fellowships in Canada

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission have an exciting opportunity for postdoctoral researchers within the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences and engineering. The Canadian Government has invited the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK to nominate up to fifteen candidates for one year 'Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships' in Canada in 2011 and they are seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates from which to select their nominees.

Note that the Commission can only accept applications from UK citizens and candidates should have been awarded their PhD within the last three years (or to have completed the PhD requirements before taking up the award in September 2011).

Applications must be made using the online application system provided by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) by the 15 November 2010, and all supporting documentation must be submitted to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK by the 25 November 2010. JISC invites institutions to submit funding proposals for projects to be funded as part of its e-content programme for 2011. Funding of up to £840,000 is available within two strands:

Strand A - Enriching via Collaboration Using collaboration to cluster, repackage and re-present existing digital content. Total funding available £400,000. Up to 5 projects will be funded. Maximum funding for any one project is £100,000

Strand B - Developing Community Content To develop new content and communities for educational and social purposes. Total funding available £440,000. Up to 6 projects will be funded. Maximum funding for any one project is £100,000.

EPSRC: Adaptation and Resilience of the UK Energy System to Climate Change

EPSRC have launched a call for proposals in the Adaptation and Resilience to a Changing Climate (ARCC) strand of the RCUK LWEC programme to fill a gap in it's coverage, specifically the "adaptation and resilience of the UK Energy Sector and its infrastructure in the context of climate change".

LMS Scheme 7 Grants

The London Mathematical Society "Scheme 7" grant programme provides small financial grants (max 500 pounds) to help support a visit for collaborative research at the interface of Mathematics and Computer Science. This is a great opportunity to cover the costs of a brief visit with a (named) Computer Scientist or Mathematician - either travelling to see them at another institution within the U.K. or abroad, or having them come to you. The scheme is overseen by the Computer Science Committee of the LMS, which exists to promote the development of links between mathematics and computer science.

The application and reporting processes are deliberately very lightweight. See the LMS website for details. The next deadline for applications is 15 September 2010.

The Royal Academy of Engineering ERA Foundation Entrepreneurs Award 2011

The Royal Academy of Engineering, in partnership with the ERA Foundation, awards a major prize each year to young entrepreneurial engineering researchers working in UK universities.

The prize is intended to encourage and reward academic staff and researchers (registered postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows) who are at an early stage in their career. The scheme provides the winner with a personal cash prize of £10,000, a further £30,000 award to be invested in the development of his or her proposal, with a mentor, to assist and the opportunity to access additional development capital. Prize winners and their home institutions receive significant publicity for this award, endorsed by The Royal Academy of Engineering. In addition to the first prize, two further prizes of £2,000 each will be awarded to the runners-up.

The competition is relevant to a wide range of disciplines that involve electro-technologies. This might include, but need not be restricted to, electrical and electronic engineering, aspects of bio-medical engineering, optics and optical engineering, instrumentation IT (software and hardware) and materials related to electro-technology.

Please note that submissions must be endorsed by a senior member of the applicant's university. We would like as many entrepreneurial researchers as possible to apply. UK - USA Partners in Science *Call for Applications - UK-US Collaboration Development Award (CDA) Programme* The UK's Science & Innovation (S&I) Network in the US is proud to announce the second round of our UK-US Collaboration Development Award (CDA) Programme. These competitive awards have been created to enable our contacts and partners to further develop relationships that have formed as a result of our various activities (workshops, conferences, visits, etc). The CDAs are small travel grants covering transportation, accommodation and subsistence (no more than £2000) to allow UK and US scientists, engineers, academic leaders and innovation experts to travel in either direction to develop their partnerships. Ideal projects will be focused on delivering strong collaborative results (i.e. joint publications, joint funding applications, student / postdoc exchanges, etc.) in the next 6-12 months.

In this second round we've been able to stretch the timeline to allow for greater flexibility. *Applications are due on 9 May*, and successful applicants will be notified on or before 4 June. *All travel funded by these awards should be completed by 1 October*.

Je-S System redesign - to be released on 20 April 2010

As part of the scheduled Je-S System release on Tuesday 20 April there will be major changes to the appearance and function for all document types of Je-S. The changes to the Je-S login site have largely been driven by a need to make the Je-S web site more accessible. An external review of the web site highlighted a number of issues that meant that it was very difficult if, for example, you use screen reading software or cannot use a mouse.

The new site is therefore designed to address this issue and in addition we hope it provides users with more useful information and that it will be easier to navigate. We realise that the changes to the layout will seem strange to frequent users who are comfortable with the old layout and navigation, however, the changes are important for users who have accessibility problems.

Above, for information, is a guidance note which explains the changes and this is being sent to everyone who has been appointed by their Research Organisation to be a Je-S Approver or Submitter of documents submitted to the Research Councils.

We hope that you will agree that the changes are an improvement and welcome any feedback that would help us to continue to improve the Je-S System.

Data mining in biology and medicine is a core component of biomedical informatics, and one of the first intensive applications of computer science to this field, whether at the clinic, the laboratory, or the research center. Following a long tradition of data exploration stemming from biostatistical data analysis, todays's biomedical data mining appears more multifaceted with advances in knowledge discovery in databases as well as machine learning approaches.

The goals of this workshop are to:
provide a forum for identifying important contributions and opportunities for research on data mining as it applies to biological and/or medical data, promote the systematic study of how to apply data mining to biology and medicine, and show case applications of data mining in biology and medicine. Some of the technical issues addressed, and potential outcomes of the workshop, are to identify preferred types of mining methods, tools, and processes, preferred domains of application, how to connect a data mining model with a problem to solve, challenges specific to applying data mining to biology and medicine, and guidelines to better develop data mining projects in this domain. We welcome all those interested in the problems and promise of data mining in biology or medicine as well as in bioinformatics, Human Genome Project, environmental sciences and agriculture.

In this workshop we intend to bring scientists together and actively identify common research threads, define open problems, and develop collaborative contacts. We aimed at providing an informal atmosphere where participants are encouraged to ask clarifying questions throughout the talks and to participate in longer discussions after each presentation. Since we anticipate varied backgrounds of the participants, we will encourage speakers to present their work from a big-picture perspective and to clearly identify key issues in their research before they dive into technical details.

A wrap-up round table discussion will summarize the lessons learnt, issues identified, and future directions.

Papers will be published in the workshop proceedings by IBaI Publishing. PostScript (compressed and uuencoded) or PDF paper submissions should be formatted according to Springer LNCS format, with a maximum of ten pages. - How the proposal directly addresses the JISC call - match to their criteria etc

Scottish Government Personal Research Fellowship co-funded by Marie Curie Actions

Whilst the Fellowship may be in any of the disciplines as defined in the regulations, including inter-disciplinary areas, preference will be given to research likely to enhance the transfer of ideas and technology from the research community into increasing sustainable economic growth for all. The research projects proposed must align to one or more of the Scottish Government’s National Outcomes.

Under the European Commission FP7 Marie Curie COFUND, funding is now available to enhance the Personal Research Fellowships with additional support to allow international collaborations to be established and networks set up.

Summary
The thematic programme “Understanding and Misunderstanding: Cognition, Communication and Culture (EuroUnderstanding)” addresses a set of inter-related questions of major current theoretical and practical importance, such as: How do communicative processes give rise to shared understandings, and how do these processes vary between cultures? How do intercultural misunderstandings arise, and what are their consequences? How do cultural and historical processes, and cultural-cognitive models, impinge on individual cognition, cognitive development and the development of personal identity? How can intercultural communication be made more effective in diverse cultural contexts?

Scientific Objectives
Understanding and misunderstanding can and should be investigated at differing levels of analysis, from neural to cultural processes. However, a comprehensive explanatory account of these phenomena requires the integration of the different levels in a non-reductionist framework. The Humanities disciplines, with their focus on meaning, are crucial to this explanatory integration. EuroUnderstanding provides opportunities for Humanities-based researchers to collaborate with each other, and with researchers from life and social science disciplines, in advancing the science and scholarship of understanding and misunderstanding.

Small Project Grants are intended to promote new initiatives in teaching, research and student provision at The University of Edinburgh, especially where relatively small sums can achieve significant effect. We have £65,000 to be distributed to students, staff, clubs, societies and University support services for a range of research projects, teaching and student activities.

The Small Project Grant programme exists thanks to the generosity of graduates and friends through their donations to the Edinburgh Fund. The programme is managed by The University of Edinburgh Development Trust, a charity set up to provide philanthropic support for the University.

1. Early Career Fellowship schemes:

JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers provides opportunities to young postdoctoral researchers from other countries to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. The program aims to help such researchers advance their own research while contributing to the advancement of research in Japan and the counterpart countries. The Royal Society is a nominating authority for this scheme and aims to support excellent researchers from the UK gain experience overseas and create strong collaborative links with Japan.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a doctorate degree when the Fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within six years prior to 2 April 2010 (i.e. awarded on or after 2 April 2004). Scientists in the final year of their PhD can submit an application. If successful, the award will only be given subject to the confirmation of his/her PhD at the time when the award is taken up. Applicants must be UK or EU citizens resident in the UK at the time of application.

Length of tenure: Between 12 months minimum and up to 24 months maximum.

Place of tenure: Japan

Value: Subsistence - 364,000 yen per month. A settling-in allowance at the start of the Fellowship of 200,000 yen. A return air ticket (based on JSPS regulations). Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage. A research grant of up to 1,500,000 yen per year.

2. Senior Fellowship schemes:

Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Awards

Jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and BIS, this scheme aims to provide universities with additional support to enable them to attract to this country, or retain, respected scientists of outstanding achievement and potential. Awards are made to the university and as such researchers must remain at the university named on the application.
The focus of the award is salary enhancement. Research expenses are also considered for research costs not suitable for Research Councils' research grants applications and for overseas applicants to support integration into the UK research and funding environment.

Eligibility: Applicants can be of any nationality and must hold, or be guaranteed, a permanent post at a UK university. All applicants must have their basic salary wholly funded by the university.
Length of tenure: Five years funding after which the award holder continues with the permanent post at the host university.

Place of tenure: UK university. Please note that these awards are made to the host university and cannot be transferred to another university.

Value: Salary enhancements have been made usually in the range of £10K to £30K per annum.

3. Innovation schemes:

Industry Fellowship Scheme

This scheme aims to enhance knowledge transfer in science and technology between those in industry and those in academia. It provides opportunities for an academic scientist to work on a collaborative project with industry, or someone employed in industry to work on a collaborative project with a university department or a not-for-profit research organisation. It is anticipated that fellows will establish personal and corporate links between the two sectors in the UK as a foundation for their long-term future development.

Eligibility: Applicants can be of any nationality and should be at a stage in their career when they would particularly benefit from establishing or strengthening personal and corporate links between the two sectors as a foundation for long-term future collaboration and development. They should hold a PhD or be of equivalent standing in their profession and hold a permanent post in either a UK university, a UK not-for-profit research organisation (e.g. the Health & Safety Executive), or in UK industry.

Length of tenure: The award can be for any period up to two years full-time or pro rata, i.e. it could be held at 50% part-time for four years enabling fellows to maintain links with their employing institution more easily.

Place of tenure: Must involve transfer between UK private industry and a UK university or a not-for-profit research organisation. Publicly funded bodies are not eligible to act as the industrial partner.
Value: The fellow's salary only will be met during the secondment; the employing institution continues to pay national insurance and pension contributions. Research expenses may be claimed up to the value of £2000 per year.

4. Research Capacity and Infrastructure schemes:

Research Grants

This scheme provides 'seed corn' funding for new projects initiated by research scientists at an early stage of their career (within the first 5 years). The objective of the scheme is to increase the availability of specialised equipment, consumable materials and services, and to support essential field research. The scheme also provides support for research in the history of science or to assist with publication of scholarly works in the history of science (subject category I), and we welcome any research proposal or publication in the area of Royal Society history.
A parallel round is available for current Royal Society University Research Fellows and Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellows who are beginning the second year of their fellowship in October.
Subjects covered: All disciplines in which the Society will elect researchers to the Fellowship of the Royal Society

Eligibility: Applicants must be resident in the UK. They should have postdoctoral level or equivalent status at the time of the application and have a permanent or limited-tenure position in an eligible organisation. An applicant who is a postdoctorate paid by a grant for which someone else is the principal investigator is not eligible. Applicants must play a major part and take a leading role in the project and not make its fulfilment more than marginally dependent on the services of postgraduate/doctoral students.

Length of tenure: The grant is for a period of 12 months

Place of tenure: UK university or not-for-profit research organisation (except for Research Council Institutes).

Value: For all subject categories (A to I), up to £15,000 (including VAT) is available for the purchase of specialised equipment, essential consumable materials and services. Up to £5,000 (including VAT) is available for the publication of scholarly works in the history of science.

5. Mobility Grants schemes:

International Joint Projects

The Royal Society Joint Project programme is designed to enable international collaboration by providing a mobility grant for researchers and members of their research teams to cover travel, subsistence and research expenses. It also aims to provide seed money for research that will lead to further collaboration and greater funding in the future from larger funding bodies.
Subjects Covered: All areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excluding clinical medicine.

Eligibility: The Project Leaders must be from academia, of at least postdoctoral status or equivalent and hold a permanent or fixed-term contract in an eligible organisation which, if it is the latter, continues at least for the duration of the project. Collaborations should be based on a single project including two teams or individuals: one based in the UK and the other based outside the UK. A relationship between both parties should already be established prior to making an application and the collaboration should involve bilateral visits between the UK and the country with which the overseas collaborator is based.

Length of Tenure: 2 years

Value of Grant: Up to £6000 a year for 2 years for travel and subsistence. Within the £6000 available each year, up to £1000 can be used for research expenses (excluding computer hardware).
Countries covered: Currently Joint Projects are available to those in European and Former Soviet Union countries, China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa and certain countries in Latin America. Please check appendix 2 of the scheme notes for eligible countries.

Cost-share arrangements: Depending on which country your collaboration is with proposals can be submitted either as a 'direct' application (to the Royal Society only) or as a 'parallel cost share' application. The latter entails the UK team leader submitting a proposal to the Royal Society AND the Overseas team leader simultaneously submitting a proposal to a partner organisation (usually an Academies of Science abroad) with whom the Royal Society has cost share agreement, in which case the travel and subsistence costs are shared between the Royal Society and the overseas Partner. Please note that 'direct' applications are still accepted even if a cost share partner is available. Please check appendix 2 of the scheme notes for cost share countries/partners.

The 2010 Russia and China cost share deadlines are yet to be confirmed but it is anticipated that they will be sometime in September and October respectively. Prospective applicants are advised to keep an eye on the website for the opening and closing dates for these rounds.
Please note that the deadlines for partner organisations may not coincide with Royal Society deadlines so it is advisable that your overseas collaborator checks with the relevant cost share partner in their country.

International Travel Grants

The International Travel Grants scheme enables UK scientists to engage in collaborations with overseas scientists in order to explore opportunities for building lasting networks or participate (excludes organising/selection committee and poster contributions) in overseas conferences, workshops and seminars which are of particular strategic importance in order to engage with scientists (available to UK scientists only). The International Travel Grant Scheme is available for all countries outside of the UK.

Eligibility: Conference participation applications must have confirmation of their invitation or acceptance of oral paper presentation. Collaboration applications must have a letter of support from the host Head of Department. UK based scientist must hold a fixed or permanent contract at an eligible UK institution. Scientists must have completed their PhD or have extensive experience at an equivalent level. Only one application can be submitted per round.

Length of tenure: Lasting up to 12 weeks (except in the case of UK applicants presenting at overseas conferences, workshops and seminars, in which case the maximum duration of award is 10 days).

Value: A maximum of £4000 is available for activities.

Collaboration Fund - Call for Expressions of Interest

The Collaboration Fund offers support to researchers wishing to work with a commercialising partner in taking forward business opportunities generated from EPSRC funded research. Support will combine grant funding with the opportunity of project mentoring and access to business planning advice.

This pilot initiative is financed by the EPSRC and managed by Finance South East, to whom all enquiries and applications should be made. Full details of the call and application procedure (which is not via Je-S) can be found at the Finance South East website.

Applications for the 2010 L'Oreal-UNESCO UK and Ireland For Women In Science fellowships are now open.

L'Oréal UK and Ireland, the UK National Commission for UNESCO, the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and the Irish National Commission for UNESCO, have partnered together to provide a dedicated UK and Ireland For Women In Science Fellowship Programme for women scientists at postdoctoral level to enable and/or facilitate promising scientific research in the life or physical sciences.

Four Fellowships will be awarded in 2010 to outstanding female postdoctoral scientists to assist them with their research. The Fellowships, each worth £15,000 (equivalent € for candidates in Ireland), are tenable at any UK or Irish university or research institute to support a 12-month period of research.

The fellowship money can be spent in any number of innovative ways to enable women scientists to further their careers and facilitate world class research - such as buying equipment, paying for childcare or funding travel costs to an overseas conference.

Important information for applicants to AHRC funding scheme

The Arts and Humanities Research Council [AHRC] supports world-class research that furthers our understanding of human culture and creativity. Important information for applicants to AHRC funding schemes

In 2010 the AHRC, along with the other Research Councils, will be transferring its grants processing activities to the new RCUK Shared Services Centre. This important change is being made in order to harmonise common processes across all Councils and to secure efficiency savings for the research budget which will be channelled into further investment in research. It will also allow for greater consistency across the Councils in the application procedure as well as the operation of peer review.

In addition, the AHRC office will be moving from Bristol to Swindon in June. Together, these changes will impact significantly on the AHRC's planned schedule of activities over the coming nine months or so. While the AHRC will do its utmost to minimise the disruption to applicants and others, normal timescales for assessing grant applications will have to be changed to enable these changes to take place as smoothly as possible and for normal business to resume after the new systems are in place.

In particular, AHRC applicants should be aware of the following changes:

*Research Grants and Fellowships Schemes* – We will not be accepting applications between 19 March 2010 – 31 May 2010. In addition, Fellowship applicants are strongly advised to submit their applications before the end of February as the outcomes of some applications submitted in March are unlikely to be announced until spring 2011. We are also rescheduling our panel meetings during 2010 which may mean that applicants will not receive outcomes when they would have been expecting them.

*Research Networking Scheme*

– We will not be accepting applications between 26 February and 31 May 2010.

*Knowledge Transfer Fellowships*

- The planned closing date in May will not occur. The scheme will re-open later in 2010 on an open deadline basis on a date to be confirmed.

*Knowledge Catalysts*

– We will not be accepting applications between 26 February 2010 and 31 August 2010. This will give time to consider the outcomes of the current review of the scheme due to be completed by end of March and implement any changes in the light of the review.

Applicants are advised to allow as much time as possible between submitting applications and the suggested start date for projects. Applicants should also bear in mind when submitting proposals that award announcements may be delayed by a number of months, and successful applicants may be required to change the start date of their projects to take this into account.

All schemes not mentioned above, including all postgraduate programmes, will continue as planned, and we will be processing all applications already submitted before the dates outlined above. It should also be noted that the overall AHRC budget will not be affected by these changes.

Professor Rick Rylance, Chief Executive of the AHRC, said: "The AHRC has a demanding year ahead with very considerable organisational upheaval. We hope that you will bear with us during this period. We will of course do everything we can to minimise disruption and to ensure everyone in the arts and humanities research community is kept fully up to date with progress in a timely way."

Further measures may need to be taken by the AHRC in the autumn of 2010, but these will be communicated in good time and through the normal channels.

Newton International Fellowship Scheme

Dear Fellows,

The next round of the Newton International Fellowship scheme closes on *8 February 2010*. The scheme, run by The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society, aims to attract the world's best postdoctoral researchers to UK Universities for two years.

The Fellowships cover the broad range of natural and social sciences, engineering and the humanities and are open to early-stage postdoctoral researchers who do not hold UK citizenship and are working outside the UK. Fifty Fellowships are available per round and successful candidates will receive an annual subsistence of £24,000, up to £8,000 for research expenses, and a one-off payment of up to £2,000 for relocation.

Newton Fellows may be eligible for follow-on funding of up to £6,000 per year for ten years, to help develop lasting international networks with the UK.

Applications are invited for Fellowships starting in January 2011.

The Industrial Secondment Scheme provides an invaluable opportunity for engineering teaching staff in Higher Education institutions to gain state-of-the-art industrial experience.

Applicable to engineers of all disciplines, the scheme's objective is to enable the secondees to impart the fruits of this experience to their students through teaching, through case studies using up-to-date material and, in the longer term, through course design.

recently some councils have gradually been phasing in a change to the Justification of Resources document. Effective Tuesday 5th January, the page limit for the JoR has been extended to two pages. Late last year this was introduced by NERC, and subsequently all research councils, as confirmed below, have followed suit.
